OK It did break after I rebooted "startx" failed.

During the dist-upgrade ubuntu-desktop was removed as was kubuntu so I 
installed Xfce4

then I reconfigured xorg.conf  "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg"

Now after I boot I can run "sudo startx" and I am up and running again 
on Xfce 4 Desktop Environment
version 4.4.1 (Xfce 4.4)

lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu gutsy (development branch)
Release:        7.10
Codename:       gutsy


I tried to install ubuntu but it has broken packages.
