I think it needed to update the meta-package first. Here the first run of
"aptitude upgrade" grabbed the "linux-generic " meta-package, then a
second run got the others.
I needed aptitude dist-upgrade to pull in the kernel packages - a plain
vanilla upgrade did not want to install them ...
$ apt-cache depends linux-generic
linux-generic
Depends: linux-image-generic
Depends: linux-restricted-modules-generic
peter at prospero:~ $ apt-cache depends linux-image-generic
linux-image-generic
Depends: linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic
