not playing media

the synaptic package manager should have that in the restricted software 
portion. If your using totem, it should guide you to it. I say that 
meaning that it will open the synaptic package manager and automatically 
search for any missing codec(s) for you

But in the case it doesnt, open the synaptic package manager, then type 
in the search box:
    gstreamer

check the box next to it and click apply

you could also apt-get it, but i dont recall which one to type in (as i 
installed the package off of synaptic package manager)
