digital camera applications

I'm looking for a better way to manage digital photos than the currently
supplied gthumb. My main complaint by that it's confusing for me and absolutely
hopeless for my wife. for me the major shortcomings are knowing whether or not
the images have been removed from the camera, whether or not they have been
copied to another location I can find later, and the ability to resize a copy of
the image.
Any commandline operations are completely off the table given that I want my
wife to be able to just use the digital camera without any fuss. Macintosh and
Windows operations seems simple by comparison and I'm hoping one of the Linux
photo application developers has taken note from the applications that work.
remember, digital cameras and Linux should not be a career for the user,
sometimes it's a picture of Aunt Rose with pie on her face printed out two
minutes after the event happened so she can take a copy home.
