Can't play MP3s?

I use totem (in conjunction with the mp3 codec). ive had many troubles 
just trying to get amarok trying to do literally anything. i cant get 
amarok to play cd's (on kubuntu) and i cant get it to play mp3s either 
(with the restricted package)

i just gave up and went with totem.
