Regaring mplayer,totem-xine, rhythmbox problems

hi,
     I installed Feisty 7.04 on my laptop yesterday night and
installed mplayer and totem-xine. When I try to run a music file using
totem it just hangs.
When I tried using mplayer from terminal
it froze too
it said

mplayer: could not connect to socket
mplayer: No such file or directory

then it proceeded to the following part
Playing Metallica - Turn the Page.mp3.
Audio file file format detected.

Any ideas what might be the problem
I checked my soundcard /dev/dsp its working
