You might be able to learn more about the problem if you watch the
.xsession_errors file in you home directory. That contains all of the error
output from programs started from the GUI. Before trying to run a program
type this from your home directory in a console window:
tail -f .xsession_errors
You could also try the same thing with /var/log/messages, which contains all
system-level error messages.
