i use Canorus and Gnometab for composing guitar/banjo music and 
tablature. both work fairly well and i also believe they both use 
lilypond on the backend, so music you compose with them should be fairly 
universally readable. depending on what instrument you are looking to 
compose for, these may work very nicely for you
