Interesting.
Indeed, it always felt like it was a trackpoint issue. A gentle nudge to 
the trackpoint used to make the problem go away for a while. Not using 
the trackpoint, but the touchpad instead, reduced the frequency of the 
problem very much.
I always thought it was the trackpoint getting stuck slightly tilted to 
the upper-left direction, instead of getting back 100% to vertical. But 
of course I had no proof.

Eventually I started to use the touchpad almost exclusively and then the 
problem almost disappeared.

I don't have that laptop anymore so I can't do any tests.

Weird.
