Hi Albert,
Sigh, it seems that you are (unfortunately) correct. It seems that this
problem does exist on many Dell laptops and is independent of operating
system.

I sure do hate to perform such blunt surgery on my laptop, but otherwise
it is pretty much useless, so I guess I don't have a choice. :(
I am simply amazed that Dell released so many different models of
laptops over with the exact same problem.
