Sound problem

Hi,

I am very pleased with ubuntu feist fawn except for one problem. I have sound 
since I can listen to mp3s but some sounds do not work. For example I have a 
mailbox monitor and a chat program (kopete wwhich I prefer over gaim) that 
are set to give a sound when incoming mail or chatsession is detected, but no 
sound is being played. How must I do to enable the system to play a sound. 
Also the login sound is not played.

PS: I have a DELL Inspiron 5300
