Try to start the Soundmixer and play around with the settings, maybe
some channel is muted.

Also, on my Thinnkpad, at first I forgot that the mute button only works
one way, i.e. to get rid off hardware mute, I needed to push the col
up/down button. I don't know if that applies to your laptop.
