gEdit - select blocks of text?

Seriously, Emacs (http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/) has this
capability built-in (maybe vi does too); see
http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/Rectangles.html.
Emacs does have a learning curve, but I'm finding it worth it.
