apt-cache policy <package>. This command searches the apt databases
that you have loaded, which means that it will only search enabled
repositories. The following shows that clamav for edgy is in universe,
and that a security update has found its way into the repositories (and
it also tells you that I have the latest version installed):
tim at marvin:~$ apt-cache policy clamav
clamav:
  Installed: 0.88.4-1ubuntu2.1
  Candidate: 0.88.4-1ubuntu2.1
  Version table:
     0.88.4-1ubuntu2.1 0
        500 http://security.ubuntu.com edgy-security/universe Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     0.88.4-1ubuntu2 0
        500 http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com edgy/universe Packages
tim at marvin:~$
