Feisty sometimes completely locks keyboard & mouse

I'm using Kubuntu Feisty on a new drive in the same machine but
different drive I formerly ran Dapper Dan with no issues at all.

At least 4 times in the past few days Feisty has completely locked up
while I was typing - twice typing an email in Thunderbird and once just
typing a command into Kterm. Each time both the keyboard and mouse stop
working. Only a hard reset brings the computer to life.

When I reset after such a lockup, I see a message about a crash handling
and inviting me to click to see details, but when I click, the box
disappears.

I've searched /var/log/* for some evidence of this to no avail.

Since the only non-common element is the drive (both purchased at the
same time, same brand, size etc) and the version of Linux loaded from a
downloaded and burned cd, it has to be one or the other.
It could also be some race condition bug.

Mostly I suspect the version of Linux but it's such a bear - easy to
reload and hard to re-configure.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this?
