I kept getting those errors when trying to install grub (grub2, actually, on
ubuntu - "grub" is 1.95 and doesn't use grub.conf, it uses menu.lst) for a
system with root on an LVM.  I thrashed with it for two days before finally
giving up and reinstalling my root fs on a regular partition.
