How can I try menu.lst, the splash image debian-gnu.xpm.gz has to be
mentioned in the grub.conf.

And, are you sure about trying to install grub on /dev/sda, the raw HD?
It is the norm to install it on the boot sector of the first partition
of the first HD (default). Anyway, I issued your command too. This is
the outcome:

dd at mahammad:~$ sudo grub-install /dev/sda
/dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.
