grub.conf?

I was reading http://ruslug.rutgers.edu/~mcgrof/grub-images/, and trying
to do it. Even from the repository I installed grub-splashimage package.

But, I was not getting the grub.conf anywhere, neither in /etc, nor
in /boot/grub. 

And even grub-install is not working, it is giving very queer results:

dd at mahammad:~$ sudo grub-install hd0,0
/dev/sda1 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.
dd at mahammad:~$ sudo grub-install /dev/sda1
/dev/sda1 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.

So, it seems, Ubuntu treats grub in a special way. Can anyone suggest
any documentation? '/usr/share/doc/grub-doc' after installing grub-doc
is no help either.
