I have seen this happen when I have used the NVidia drivers from the 
NVidia site and the version of /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglx.so (or was 
it /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so) gets overwritten with the 
Ubuntu one. Even glxinfo would cause X to crash and drop me back to the 
login screen. Google Earth uses OpenGL so that may be your problem.
