Wired network-connection problems solved ... but why?

I couldn't connect to my company's wired-Ethernet network
yesterday or this morning using Feisty, when I'd never had
any problems with Edgy and had in fact had no problems with
Feisty until yesterday. (I upgraded to Feisty on the 19th.)

After doing ifup eth0/ifdown eth0 a million times, scouring
the Net (from a working computer), doing
/etc/init.d/networking restart a few times, rebooting,
trying things like disabling avahi-daemon in
/etc/default/avahi-daemon and much besides, it seems that
this did the trick:

sudo rmmod e1000
sudo modprobe e1000
sudo ifdown eth0
sudo dhclient eth0

Why should that work?

a) Shouldn't Feisty already know to load e1000, given what
   lspci (below) says?
b) Shouldn't ifdown/ifup already have done 'dhclient eth0'?

I'll now do a reboot, followed by the last three of the
above four steps. (I believe e1000 is not getting loaded by
default, so the first is superfluous.) If I'm right,

a) the network won't be up just after the reboot, but
b) it will come up after those three steps.

What's the deal? Why doesn't Feisty get this right?
