ubuntu fonts look awful

I have a 20,1 " LG monitor.

I'm trying to switch to Ubuntu from windows XP and struggled for the last 3
days trying to make fonts on desktop look decent. I searched google and
tried all sort of recipes. Even tried installing Tahoma microsoft fonts. But
no joy.

Fonts are not clearly seen. When I increase their size then they start
looking ugly. This message I'm writing from Windows, my eyes cannot stand
Ubuntu fonts.

Any ideas?
