alsa-utils startup service disabled - fesity

Hi folks,
I installed Ubuntu Feisty Fawn today, and I find that the alsa-utils startup
service is de-selected(disabled). I found this out by going to the
System->Administration->Services item from the main menu.
Isn't alsa-utils essential for sound to work?
Isn't it the thingy that saves volume levels across reboots?
Should I enable this service?
Is it a bug if this is not enabled by default on a new install (like mine)?
Thank you,
Carthik.
