No sound in Flash, online help not solving the problem [SOLVED]

Thanks for the response.

After some more digging, I was able to find a solution on this web page:

Basically a complete purge of all sound and configuration files, and 
then re-installing them.

Annoyingly, removing the necessary sound packages also meant removing 
and re-installing some general packages like "ubuntu-desktop", which 
means I have to redo some basic settings. But a small price to pay to 
get sound working properly again.
