Yeah might be that ! ;-)
Indeed the first thing I do whenever I install Ubuntu,
is to install all Gstreamer plug-ins, replace Totem with Totem-xine, and
the w32codec package.
On the other hand, right now I just downloaded an mp4 video,
which totem refuses to load (it hangs), and can't even thumbnail, yet
it didn't offer to install any codec for it...
