can't write UDF filesystem

I have tried to write to a UDF filesystem I created with mkudffs from
the udf-tools package. I should note that I am able to create the
filesystem with no trouble. But if I try to mount it and write a file to
it I get read-only filesystem errors. I tried an existing filesystem
with files already on it and I can read all the files. However I get the
same read-only filesystem erroes if I try to copy a new file to it or
change an existing file. Is there anything I can do short of recompiling
my kernel to be able to write to a UDF filesystem? I am using a DVD+RW
disc and have tried both with and without the pktcdvd module loaded and
with and without the pktcdvd devices setup.

Thanks for any help,
Lorenzo
