Feisty networking issues

My Acer laptop can communicate with my wireless router, but only after
a very cumbersome process of entering a keyring passphrase *and* a WEP
passphrase. The window requesting the WEP passphrase opens behind the
terminal window that has already opened, so it's not entirely obvious
that the delay is because it's waiting for a passphrase.

Is there a way of having the connection made automatically, without all
the paranoia? The WEP passphrase was stored in the network manager set
up, but that seems to get ignored. I suspect this is because of some
confusion in the software between 64 and 128 bit, but I may be wrong.
