sound question

Larry,
   I finally got time to get back to my sound problems. I tried playing
a music cd. It opens sound jucier, but no audio while it is playing the
song.
I opened alsamixer It has various bar graphs but I have no idea how to
tell what is turned on or off and how to turn sound on if it is off.
On this stuff I am totally clueless any help would be greatly
appreciated.
