Read /etc/init.d/gdm (it's a shell script) and see what it does besides
running gdm. Yes, there is a reason.

Besides, "/etc/init.d/* start|stop|restart" is the standard way to run
services/daemons on a GNU/Linux system and it is a good idea to learn
stuff if you want to use the cmd line. Other services might not take so
kindly to just starting them without the proper script
