Slow connection to mail server

I have had a very low level condition that I would like, at some time,
to fix. I have a firewall box that is also a mailer and I have internal
machines. When I mail through my mailer, it takes a long time for
Thunderbird to connect and send the message. I can't think of a time
when it has failed. Is this long latency indicative of something simple?
