Can I over ride the disk check?

Ubuntu Users,
As everyone knows, every so often when you boot the computer, it forces
a scan of the disk. I believe this is happening every 30 boots or so.
However, while I understand that this is a good thing and don't often
have a problem, sometimes it happens at an inconvenient time. Like when
I've turned my computer off and I have to rush out the house to a
meeting, but then I remember I need to get a file off my computer, so I
turn it on again... and it makes me wait. Quite a while with a 250GB HD.
[ctrl+C] doesn't seem to stop it, nor does the Escape key.
Is there a way I can stop it when I need the computer on in a hurry?
