graphics acceleration

I am having issues with graphics acceleration, I have asked this
question before, and was pointed to a very helpful howto on the ubuntu
forums

I was told there to install the ATI driver, xorg-driver-fglrx

apt-get install says that this package does not exist

I did a search on synaptic for fglrx, and the only package that came up
was already installed

I'm assuming that this means I have the driver installed an working, but
graphics are extremely slow, is there anything else I can do?
