Upgrade or Re-install - Edgy to Feisty

How important is this machine to these 5 people? Critical, or just kinda
nice? If it's important at all,

* get a test machine and stage the upgrade.

If you can't do that, you need to either

1) not upgrade
2) not care about downtime / data loss

If there is any valuable data on that machine, you should have nightly
backups of homedirs anyway, so that shouldn't be an issue.

If you're not familiar with linux system adminstration, there's the basic
http://tldp.org/LDP/sag/html/index.html

and for more about the duties of system administration
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_administrator

and many other documents available. There's far too much to read, but
it's better to read about the basics than have to rediscover everything
from scratch. (like the consequences of not staging an update :P)
