The canonical answer here is Darik's Boot and Nuke:

Burn a small file to a CD, reboot from that CD, and voila:
it'll wipe the hard drives you tell it to wipe. Its design
goal seems to be: help the user wipe out data when there's
an emergency. I believe it can be set to wipe data off every
hard drive it finds.
So yes, DBAN. There's really no better tool for it. Check
the FAQ <http://dban.sourceforge.net/faq/> for evidence that
Darik has thought about the details of data wiping more than
any other commercial product.
