Jim, I've got a similar vaio but fe series with the same DVD drive mine
is mapped to /dev/hda;

ben at vaio:~$ dmesg |grep DVR
[    4.520000] hda: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K16D, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive

with the harddrive on /dev/sda, is the above line present in your dmesg
output without the cd inplace? if so u should just be able to manually
mount it? i also have a symlink from /dev/hda -> /dev/dvd where xine,
etc. is set to look for a dvd by default.

also re the webcam, the driver you need is in the gspca-source package
and u'll have to compile the module for it to work, all the doc on what
todo will be under /usr/share/doc/gspca-source
