Can't Query External Serial Modem

Basic things to try first:

Does the command ATE1 <CR> do anything? (turns on echo)

Does the command ATZ <CR> do anything? (soft reset)

Does the command AT&F0 <CR> do anything? (thats AT&F<zero> not <captial o>
- this command should reset to factory defaults which is necessary on some
modems that I have seen)
