Herd 5 install hangs

did you verify the checksum of the ISO you used to burn the disc to install
it?

if everything is right, then try passing "noapic noacpi" to the CD as kernel
parameters. ACPI usually gives me problems. And when you have dual CPUs or
hyper-thread, noapic usually helps.
