ALT+F2 (Run command) takes ages to write a program name

I'm not sure how long you mean "ages" to be, but the run dialog does do
a lot during startup. Notably, it reads a bunch of .desktop files so you
can complete commands and present the list of applications with their
icons. Maybe a reasonable fix would be to have it only search .desktop
files when the "Show list of known applications" is ticked open. But
that would require some coding...
