Quick update:
This mornings updates (133 to me) fixed the HAL race condition of
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/81670
Hooray! I can now boot into my Feisty test machine without having to
connect a keyboard, mouse & monitor again :-) That was a major
showstopper for me.
Fixed the "ALSA lib conf:1234 (snd_func_reconcat) error evaluating
strings errors":
I manually modified the /etc/modules file to include the driver for the
old AWE Soundblaster sound card. Sound now works & I no longer get the
errors. Still don't know what gksu gedit has to do with the ALSA sound
drivers...
