Dual boot to Windows and do it from there... or buy an external serial
modem.

No joking. I have 6 systems with modem cards that work just fine with
Windows; all can send and receive faxes, dial my ISP when the DSL is
down, etc. 3 are dedicated modem cards (not "winmodems") and I have yet
to have a *single one* that I can get working with Ubuntu; including
fax, basic dialup connections, anything.

I've searched the forums, I've tried the wiki's, I've tested until I'm
blue in the face. Bottom line is that I've come to the conclusion that
Ubuntu *does not* support internal modems, winmodems, anything regarding
dial modems, modems that are installed and working in millions of PC's
worldwide via Windows.

So rather than spend countless hours trying to get your fax modem to
work with Ubuntu, spend the money to: a) buy a serial modem so that you
can upload/download files at about 28Kbps, c) spend time trying to get
efax to work, or b) use an old PC w/fax modem & load windows on it and
use that for fax send/receive.
In the long run option b is cheaper, it works.

Don't get me wrong, I am a very strong proponent of linux & Ubuntu, but
at some point you have to recognize that dial modems are Ubuntu's
weakness. Try another linux distro, or just continue to use Windows for
dial modem applications...
