There are some tools available for reading .chm files. Namely gnochm
and xchm. They are GUI tools although they may have command line
options. I am not in front of a machine I can use to check that at the
moment. There is also libchm and a python interface to it call pychm
(i think that's it's name) that you could use to write a little script
to search for what you are looking for. Although not a solution these
are a few things you can try.
