FTP Monopolises My ADSL Connection

Whenever I use the ftp client in Konqueror (or whatever) I find it takes over 
the connection ... and checking emails, etc.  just doesn't happen.  I am 
getting a decent download speed at present ... about 52 KB/s ... but my 
internet phone is unusable!  Is there a robust ftp client which you can 
install .. which can be set to a lower priority than other programs??  I can 
download at quiet times ... when my wife wants to use the phone...!
