Should I upgrade Dapper to Edgy

I have a couple of problems with this system that I was wondering if an
upgrade might fix. System is a Sony VGN-FJ250 Laptop, 1GB RAM, Intel
IPW2200 Wireless, Pentium M. Most irritating problem, Wireless was
working now has just quit. I can bring p KWiFi Manager and activate
wireless or so it says, but no packets are getting thru from the router
to the Internet. Router settings check out and I am currently connected
using an ethernet cable to the router.
Second problem, DVDRW Drive does not recognise a disk inserted and will
not open disk. Error message here is " /dev/scd0 does not exist."
Strangely, if a disk is in the drive when the machine boots Ubuntu it is
then recognised and can be played, burned etc. Is not /dev/scd0 just a
link to /media/cdrom0?
Any help is appreciated. I was going to upgrade one of these days anyway
and this may provide more motive.
Thank you
Jim
