I had this problem on a dual boot machine. Ubuntu would not work with
the BIOS fake raid (but WinXP would). Ubuntu required Linux s/w raid
(which works well) but Windows won't work with that. I gave up in the
end and just put 1 drive in and back it up.
If you'are not doing dual boot. Turn off your BIOS RAID and use linux
s/w RAID.
