Using the Konsole - by a complete Linux newbie!

You must remember Madeleine that linux is case sensitive. Ensure that you
specify the name exactly... the TAB key is your friend here - it will
autocomplete the filename for you.
get to a command prompt in you Desktop directory. An 'ls' command should
show the xampp file sitting there.
enter 'tar xvf xamp' and press the tab key. The filename should be completed
for you with all upper and lowercase letters all correctly specified.
