Changing the resolution of a virtual terminal

I installed Feisty on i845G today. hwinfo --framebuffer here lists only mode 301, 640x480.

I've tried framebuffer on a lot of distros over the years, and IIRC, on i8xx video chips the only thing besides vga=normal that ever works with standard framebuffer is vga=0x120. There are others that
should work, but don't: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7513

There is or was once an i810fb alternative, but I've never managed to get it to work. http://i810fb.sourceforge.net/howto/x11.html
