I was going to reply with a similar message when I saw the original 
post.  I have a pre-2000 BIOS machine that had a similar range of 
cryptic error messages. As you've found out ACCPI off solves some of 
them.  The others on mine were related to ISA cards.  The sound card I 
removed as it wasn't needed and the other, a Ethernet card was replaced 
with a PCI version.  Now all is well and I just wait for the 'System 
Halted' message before switch off.
Yes the installation process is painfully slow, but hopefully you won't 
have to repeat it.
