Unable to write to home dir at times.

No... I checked that.  I have plenty.  And most of my home dir's
sub-dirs are nfs mounts to a server.   However the sub-dir I was
writing to is local on machine.

Since I wrote my email I've not had the issue.  So I'm still not
exactly sure what is happening.
