Swapped out the Mitsumi FX4830T with a Panasonic Matshita SR-8583
DVD-ROM (5X/32X) out of an old Compaq Presario and no problems now. So,
it looks like the kernel problem with
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/99800
is valid. I'll add something to the bug later.
