How do I start kbuntu on a ubuntu system

No. You can do both. I run the two just fine. I prefer KDE, rest of the
family likes gnome. There are some gnome apps that I use while running KDE
and vice versa. installing kubuntu-desktop does nothing to change or
'overlay' ubuntu-desktop.
