Initrd too big

I just finished building a new custom kernel. My system requires an 
initrd.img file so I ran "$ sudo mkinitrd -o newinitfilename 
newkernelversion". Mkinitrd would not finish due the device being full 
so I re-ran mkinitrd, but told it to make the init file in /root,"$ sudo 
mkinitrd -o /root/newinitfilename newkernelversion". Turns out, the new 
init file is over 51 meg. My boot partition is only 32 meg. What would 
cause the init file to get so large?
